As the Mill goes to press there are fewer than 14 hours until the transfer window screeches shut. It remains unclear if the rolling news presenters have even been to sleep, given the Overwhelming Importance of the Next Few Hours.

The spectre of Everton’s 10-point penalty has deflated the Premier League transfer market to a large degree, but there is still a bit of time for some excitement. Newcastle are a club keen to offload players to free up funds, and there is a suspicion that some action may originate from St James’ Park today. Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almíron and Jamal Lascelles have all been linked with a move away, while Eddie Howe is said to be keen to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa. Howe wants Ramsey on loan with an option to buy: the 22-year-old has also been linked with Tottenham. But then again, who hasn’t? A rumoured outgoing move – Wilson to Chelsea on loan – is off the menu following an injury to his fellow forward, Alexander Isak.
Left to right: Sweden's Emil Forsberg, Barcelona unveil their new signing Vitor Roque, Eljif Elmas.

Title-chasing Arsenal are being linked with Ibrahim Osman of FC Nordsjælland – the 19-year-old forward was a recent target of West Ham, but those talks hit the buffers, and Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to carry out a good, old-fashioned transfer hijack.

Crystal Palace are being linked with a last-minute swoop for Maxwell Cornet from West Ham – the former Lyon and Burnley is keen to move, reports Ed Aarons. Saïd Benrahma, meanwhile, is said to be weighing up an offer from Lyon to join them for the remainder of this season, with an option to join permanently in the summer.

Nottingham Forest have sealed a loan move for the 18-year-old striker, Rodrigo Ribeiro, from Sporting for the rest of the season. The Portugal Under-20 international made his Champions League debut against Manchester City in 2022 and is said to be very highly rated by Nuno Espírito Santo.

Forest are very much the new Tottenham when it comes to sheer levels of transfer speculation, and Fabrizo Romano reports they have bid around £5m for the 31-year-old Strasbourg goalkeeper, Matz Selz. That would presumably end any interest they had in Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace. The Tricky Trees are also about to offload Orel Mangala to Lyon on loan with an option to buy, it is being reported.

In perfect keeping with this underwhelming transfer window, the Mail reports Wolves’ proposed signing of Yuri Alberto, of Corinthians, has collapsed due to “financial differences”. Wolves are still keen to sign Armando Broja from Chelsea, however, and face competition from Fulham to that end. Jacob Steinberg reports that Chelsea want a £5m loan fee for the Albania international.

The Brighton midfielder, Mahmoud Dahoud, has joined Stuttgart on loan until the end of the season. The 28-year-old German made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls. The club’s technical director, David Weir, said: “This is a good move for Mahmoud. It will give him an opportunity to play regularly for a side doing very well towards the top of the Bundesliga.”

And one other confirmed move for transfer newshounds to cling to is Carlos Alcaraz signing for Italian giants Juventus from Southampton. You can find details of that – and all the day’s other moves – on today’s dedicated transfer window deadline day blog. Allez!

West Ham and Brighton could rekindle their interest, whilst Spurs, Wolfsburg, Gladbach, Bologna and Monaco are all interested next window.🇬🇭

West Ham and why signing a winger this window has been so complicated

By Roshane Thomas

It has always been a priority for West Ham United to sign a left-sided attacker in this window, but such moves have been complicated by several factors.

West Ham remain interested in signing former Celtic forward Jota from Al Ittihad, but a move has proven difficult due to tax issues. The 24-year-old is interested in joining David Moyes’ side, with Al Ittihad keen to get Jota off the wage bill. The forward has not played a game in the Saudi Pro League since September due to the restriction on overseas players. The additions of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Fabinho last summer made it difficult for Jota.

Moyes and his recruitment team also identified Nordsjaelland forward Ibrahim Osman as an option, but West Ham have walked away from a deal for the 19-year-old due to the Danish side’s asking price. The forward is a product of the Right To Dream Academy in Ghana, which produced Mohammed Kudus. Osman has amassed four goals and five assists across 29 appearances this season.

A loan move for Emile Smith Rowe, of Arsenal, was rejected earlier this window. A switch for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke was always deemed unlikely, with the Championship side valuing the player at £20million ($25.3m).

There is still the possibility of departures before the end of the window. Lyon have made an offer of around £15million plus add-ons for winger Said Benrahma. The 28-year-old, who joined from Brentford on a permanent deal in January 2021, is keen on the switch, but West Ham are hoping for an improved offer.

Benrahma has played just 615 minutes in the Premier League this season. He is yet to score having started six matches. He has also registered just one assist in all competitions. Benrahma, who was not selected in Algeria’s 26-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, has also received interest from Brentford and Marseille this window.

Lyon initially expressed interest in signing the attacker on loan with the option to buy, but it is West Ham’s preference to sell.

In December, West Ham activated the one-year option in Pablo Fornals’ contract which expires in 2025. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder could remain at the London Stadium with Spanish side Real Betis yet to meet West Ham’s valuation. Fornals has struggled to force his way into manager David Moyes’ starting XI this campaign, with Bowen, Kudus and Paqueta Moyes’ preferred attacking options. If Fornals remains at the club, he will be allowed to leave in the summer.

Maxwel Cornet has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest. The 27-year-old has struggled for game time since joining from Burnley for £17.5million in August 2022. The winger has only made two appearances in the Premier League this season, but Cornet wants to stay at West Ham and reevaluate his future in the summer. His contract expires in the summer of 2027, with a further one-year option.

Nayef Aguerd, who is on AFCON duty with Morocco, was linked with moves to AC Milan, Roma and an unnamed Saudi club earlier this window, but West Ham never had any intention of selling the centre-back. Last summer, Aguerd decided to stay at West Ham having received offers from two unnamed European suitors and a club in the Saudi Pro League. Aguerd joined from Rennes for £30million in June 2022. His contract expires in the summer of 2027.

Youngster Divin Mubama is yet to reach an agreement over a contract extension but will not be allowed to leave in this window. The 19-year-old forward is entering the final months of his deal and has rejected contract offers from West Ham.

The club will decide in the coming weeks whether to offer Mubama an improved deal.

Similar to Mubama, Ben Johnson’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. Crystal Palace and Leeds United have enquired about Johnson’s availability. The versatile defender has rejected two contract offers and wants assurances over playing time.

West Ham’s offer of a four-year deal was initially their final offer, but talks are likely to resume in the coming weeks
